The story of Galjoenswaai

Long before the days of fancy Penn fishing reels, fishermen used centrifugal force to get their hooks and bait into the galjoen-rich waters of Wamakersvlei.

The fishermen would patiently attach their sinkers and baited hooks onto a piece of rope. The rope and bait would then be whirled around in a horizontal plain and then released between the second and third waves where the galjoen normally feed.

Nowadays, local fishermen still have a saying that “die galjoen loop by Wamakersvlei, ons gaan vandag galjoen swaai” (the galjoen fish is around today in Wamakersvlei, and we are going to catch galjoen!) You should try it!
